The UK Lotto was first introduced as a weekly Saturday draw in 1994 known as the National Lottery. A mid-week Wednesday draw was introduced in 1997 and in 2002, the game was rebranded to the UK Lotto. On 5th October 2013 the UK Lotto underwent an overhaul, which included increasing jackpot sizes, altering the prize tiers and introducing a brand new Lotto Raffle.
UK Lotto Draw Schedule
The UK Lotto is drawn on Wednesdays at approximately 21.00 GMT and Saturdays from 20:30 GMT. The weekend results are televised as part of a wider programme and frequently features celebrities who “push the button” to start the draw.

For each draw, one of 14 ball machines is used along with one of six sets of balls, which are picked at random by an independent member of the public. The ball machines are either named after mythical heroes from the legend of King Arthur, including Guinevere, Arthur and Lancelot, or named after several gemstones like Moonstone or Sapphire. Players often believe they have better luck with specific ones.
How to Play and Win UK Lotto
To play the UK Lotto, players must choose six numbers from a pool of 49. In order to win the jackpot all six must match the main winning balls drawn. You can also become a winner by matching three, four, or five main balls as well as five plus the Bonus ball – the prizes for matching four or above are made up of a percentage of the prize pool, unlike the lowest prize tier for matching three which is a guaranteed £25.
There is a 1 in 54 chance of winning any prize on the UK Lotto and a 1 in 13,983,815 chance of scooping the jackpot. If no player matches all six numbers correctly to win the top prize, it will roll over to the next draw. The UK Lotto can rollover a maximum of four times, and if it is not won on the fifth draw the jackpot will roll down to the next prize tier with at least one winning ticket holder.
