A 59-year-old pastor from Polokwane, Limpopo, has revealed he has big plans after winning a South Africa Lotto jackpot worth R15 million on Wednesday 22nd August. The winner, who has been unemployed for 20 years, believes receiving the eight-figure windfall is a ‘gift from God’.

R30 Million Jackpot Split Between Two Winners

The pastor was one of two ticket holders celebrating on the night, after they both matched all six main numbers - 2, 3, 21, 23, 41 and 46 - to share the R30 million jackpot and take home R15 million each.

The now multi-millionaire spent R20 on his winning tickets and explained to Ithuba - South Africa’s official National Lottery operator - he plans to use the money to treat his wife, help renovate his church, pursue his passion for farming, and also help family and friends who have been there for him financially over the years.

He said: “I plan to spoil my wife of 20 years as a token of appreciation to her, for sticking by my side when the going was tough. People used to tell her to leave me because I was broke. Today, I’m a millionaire! I decided to take my changes and placed my bet using R20. I am glad I did.”

The man, who has decided to remain anonymous, said he previously set up spaza shops (a convenience shop ran from home) and other informal businesses which didn’t succeed. He said he missed the live draw but checked his numbers at an authorised ticket retailer on his way home. However, he said he didn’t know he had won the jackpot until he got home, where he told his wife the good news.

Win Follows On From Record PowerBall Jackpot

The latest Lotto jackpot win also follows on from the record R145 million South Africa PowerBall jackpot won by a single ticket holder, a 34-year-old engineer from Mpumalanga, on 3rd August. The mammoth nine-figure windfall was the biggest jackpot ever won in PowerBall history.

The Polokwane-based pastor is the second Lotto jackpot winner to come from the Limpopo region in recent months, after a store in Mankweng sold a ticket worth R47.3 million back in July.
