Coffee Club Syndicate Claims $10 Million Oz Lotto Prize
A group of people who met through a coffee club four years ago have come forward to claim the AU$10 million Oz Lotto jackpot from the draw on 2nd October. Each member of the 22-strong syndicate will walk away with $457,000.
The syndicate from Albany in southwest Australia met four years ago as part of a daily coffee club, and its members soon decided to throw some money in a pot to buy lottery tickets. “We were all strangers back then but have almost become like a family now,” one of the syndicate members said.
Speaking about the moment they found out about the eight-figure win, they said: “Some of us were literally jumping in excitement. It felt like a dream! Actually it still does.” Another member added: “I can now put my daughter through university – it just makes life a whole lot easier.”
Their winning ticket was bought from Clarks Newsagency in Albany and it was the only one to match all seven winning numbers in the draw on 2nd October to win the AU$10 million jackpot, beating odds of 1 in 45 million.
Prior to the syndicate coming forward, the Chief Executive of Lotterywest, Susan Hunt, said: “We’re thrilled that a Western Australian has collected the Division One prize and thousands of other players have taken home OZ Lotto prizes in the other Divisions.
“The great news is that it’s not just Lotto players who win with Lotterywest, the Western Australian community also benefits from Lotterywest sales. In fact tonight’s draw raised close to $1 million to support the local community through Lotterywest grants.”
Hundreds of millions of dollars are distributed to charitable and non-profit organisations throughout Western Australia every year, thanks to Lotterywest’s grants programme. Around 60% of the lottery’s revenue goes back into helping communities, and in 2017 over AU$260 million worth of grants were awarded. The money is used in a range of sectors, from funding for community events, emergency relief, arts and heritage, and vehicles and transportation.
