A school janitor from Surrey in Canada has promised to give his family a better future after winning CA$7 million on Lotto 6/49. However, he has no plans to give up his job and will carry on working despite being a multimillionaire.

Vito Halasan had only recently turned 58 when he received a late birthday present in the draw on Saturday 27th April. He matched the winning numbers 5, 6, 11, 16, 19 and 27, becoming the 14th Lotto 6/49 player this year to scoop the jackpot.

Recalling the moment he discovered he had won, Halasan revealed it took some time to come to terms with what had happened. I remember scanning my ticket and seeing all these numbers,” he said. “I have really blurry vision, so I had to hold the ticket right up to my face. I couldn’t believe it.”

Halasan was in a state of shock when he called his daughter, and she was sceptical about whether he had really won. “He sat me down at the table,” his daughter told the British COlumbia Lottery Corporation. “And then he whispered really quietly to me that he won $7 million dollars.I didn’t believe him. We had to check online several times.”

Halasan, who moved to Canada from the Philippines in 2009, added: “I buy lottery tickets so I can dream,” the father of three and grandfather of four explained. “I dream of being able to take care of my kids and make their future better. Now we’ll be able to buy a nice house for my children and grandchildren.”

Halasan has three children and four grandchildren and is looking forward to spending more time with them. He is planning to take life a bit easier so will cut down his hours at work, but he wants to make sure he can give them as much as possible so he will not quit his job as a janitor.

How Lotto 6/49 Works

Lotto 6/49 is a game that takes place every Wednesday and Saturday evening. It can be played all over Canada and online. As the name suggests, you have to select six numbers from 1 to 49 to take part, and if you match all the numbers you win the jackpot, which starts at a minimum of CA$5 million and rolls over when there are no winners.

A Bonus Ball is also selected from the remaining 43 numbers, helping to create six other prize tiers below the jackpot. It is therefore possible to win by matching two numbers upwards. A Guaranteed Prize Draw is also held alongside every game, ensuring that one player will always win CA$1 million.

You have 12 months to come forward and claim prizes, and must redeem any prizes you win in the same province where you bought your ticket. The jackpot for the next draw will be worth CA$14 million.
