Improving Lotto Odds

Improving lotto odds is something that most players would like to do, and even though the odds of winning a lotto game with a single entry are always fixed, you can improve your overall chances of winning a prize by purchasing multiple tickets. How you choose your numbers for such multiple entries is of course entirely up to you. Buying several Lucky Dip or Quick Pick entries which consist of randomly generated numbers is one very easy way of improving lotto odds, but another way of improving lotto odds is by going about things in a more systematic manner.

Consecutive number approach

One way of improving lotto odds that you might like to consider is to buy enough entries to include every possible number used in the lotto game you play. For illustration purposes let us imagine that you want to play the 6/49 Lotto game in Canada or the Lotto game in the UK which also happens to be based on a 6 from 49 matrix. In that case you would need to buy nine entries to cover all 49 possible numbers. If you were to enter your numbers in consecutive order your nine lines might look something like this:

The question marks in the ninth line should be replaced with whatever numbers you prefer because all numbers have already been used once. And of course, if you are happy to cover just 48 out of 49 numbers you could skip the ninth entry altogether.

Mixed number approach

The consecutive number approach is great for illustration purposes, but not many people would actually want to enter line after line of consecutive numbers. An alternative is therefore to mix the numbers up, but to make sure that you don’t repeat any number among your entries until you are sure that you have space to do so, as follows:

Whichever approach you take, and whichever lotto game you play, the basic rule is to enter the minimum quantity of lines that are required to include all of the numbers once. When you do that you give yourself the guarantee that your entries will match all of the lotto numbers that are drawn, and all you have to do then is hope that enough of those numbers line up to win you a prize!

As far as improving lotto odds is concerned, your overall odds of winning a jackpot using this method will be the regular odds multiplied by the number of lines you play. For example, the odds of winning a 6/49 Lotto jackpot with a single entry are 1 in 13,983,816, so your odds of winning the jackpot with nine entries would be 9 in 13,983,816, which equates to around 1 in 1,554,090. And if that isn’t improving lotto odds then we don’t know what is!
